Born in the United States, Brad Friedel played several sports as a youngster, including soccer, basketball and tennis - and he excelled in all three, earning Bay High's Outstanding Athlete of the Year award in 1989. Over his three seasons at UCLA (1990-1992), he established himself as one of the greatest collegiate goalkeepers, and in 1990, he backstopped the Bruins to the NCAA championship. By the way, Friedel began as a forward on his youth football team before moving into goal. The SoccerAmerica magazine named Friedel to its College Team of the Century.
